Far away in time

Mini Update April 25, 2008

So, clearly I need some sort of dictatorial schedule or I will never post at all, but it is late now, so I will leave the schedule making for tomorrow.  I’ve been working on my altered book, which is coming along great, and I’ve got an idea for another one too, I need to start working on my sister’s dress that she asked me to alter (it shouldn’t really take that long, I just have to stop being weird about it), I worked last weekend, and next week I have to prep for two projects that I’m designing (costumes) for.  So yeah, I’ve been keeping busy and having meetings and watching tons of tv.  And now I’m going to bed.

TV and Art (Two Separate Discussions) April 18, 2008

Filed under: A Purse Full of Boys Wrapped in Napkins,Artsy,Beauty Queen Hands,Me,TV — Echo Beach @ 12:12 am

So the Eli Stone finale was on tonight, and oh man you guys, there was so much crying. I started getting all teary before the opening credits, then Victor Garber got me really going, and I spent at least the last half-hour just all out; tears-streaming-down-the-face, the whole nine yards. It was very cathartic, I feel great now. Seriously, if it’s back next season you guys should totally watch it. The beginning of the season was kinda rocky, but it’s totally becoming my new Grey’s Anatomy (i.e. show that makes me cry every week, whether I want to or not [Grey’s Anatomy itself no longer fills this role, which continues to make me sad, but in a disappointed way, not a crying way]). Also you have not lived until you’ve seen Victor Garber sing (yeah I totally love him, but he’s awesome, spy daddy, lawyer daddy, I don’t care, he’s totally my TV surrogate dad. Along with Hugh Laurie on House, and if the image of the two of them as a gay couple with a daughter doesn’t make you unreasonably happy, I don’t know what will).

In other news from tonight’s TV shows: on The Office Jim and Pam are too cute for words, I totally “awww”-ed, even after I had steeled myself against their cuteness. But I think the internet quiz was right, Jim really is my ideal boyfriend; I just want a tall, dorky guy who I can joke, (and banter) with, and who sometimes calls me by my last name. See, that’s not so much really.

In non-television news, I was looking for quilt books at the library, and I found this altered books book, and it’s totally amazing. I’ve done some collage, a little painting, not much three-D but I have made a few books into boxes, (I have actually made books, but they didn’t have anything inside them). But this is like this amazing combination of all three, with words underneath, the possibility for narrative, and interactivity. I started making one last night, using my file of ten years worth of magazine clippings, plus the three+ year old stack of Elles that I can never bring myself to throw away, because when I go on an art binge and I need to find pictures of doors they are there for me. I’ve got one page spread done, and one halfway done, and there are piles of magazine pages spread across my entire floor, and it’s great. however I have discovered that I’m too old to sit all hunched over on the floor to work on a project. I go into this kind of a fugue state, where I’m so involved and focused on what I’m working on that everything else just falls away, and I’ll “wake up” two, three, four hours later, and these past few days I’ve barely been able to stand back up, my back and legs are so sore. Sadly I am not yet old enough to afford a nice big table to work at (I have a desk for my sewing machine, but it’s small, and cluttered with sewing crap) so I’m going to keep sitting on the floor (and spreading all my stuff across it).

In bottom of the page news: I have finished my week of everyday blogging, but I think I’ve finally sorted out what I want this thing to be, so I’m going to keep writing regularly (I wish I could promise only when I had something to say, but it’s more likely to be the opposite). I also want to write about Dollhouse (it’s on the hastily scrawled post-it), but I’m still trying to marshal my thoughts beyond “Squee!”, so we’ll see how that goes.

Freaks and Geeks April 14, 2008

So I just started getting Freaks and Geeks from Netflix (I’m on the second disk), but it’s great. It’s hilarious, and painful, and it represents what high school is actually like, unlike literally every other movie or television show about high school I’ve ever seen. But the reason I really like it is that John Francis Daley looks disturbingly like my little brother (who is 13 right now), and I just want to give him a hug all the time.

Sam Weir

Sadly, neither my sister or I particularly resemble Linda Cardellini, although someone did tell me this weekend that I looked like Velma from Scooby Doo who was played by Linda Cardellini in the live-action movie, so maybe it’s not that far fetched. Although I just assumed they were just reacting to the glasses / cute bob combo, someone else that day told me I could be batgirl (red hair plus black Doc Martens), so I took it with a grain of salt.

+ Batgirl = Me?

But I’m going to keep Velma in mind for a Halloween costume.

In other news I’m getting a noise headache from the hood (fan/vent combo) over my stove. I got a notice saying the gas in my building was going to be shut down today (due to a “major” but unnamed “emergency”) and this apparently has made my stove smell like gas. It makes no sense to me, but I figured a noise headache was better than a gas-fumes one, so the hood’s staying on. The notice also said “Please take all the necessary steps to be ready for this emergency” [all caps and underlined] and I hope they were talking about the emergency of having the gas shut off, and not the vague yet preplanned emergency that necessitated turning off the gas.

I am going to leave you with a you-tube video of John Francis Daley on the set of Freaks and Geeks, acting just like my little brother. And if you want to see him all growed up, Bones is finally back tonight at 8. (opposite HIMYM, but that’s a whole nother story.)

Nothing Very Interesting

As I am not feeling particularly “inspired” today (it’s hot here, even though it’s after midnight, and I’ve been trying not to use my air conditioner for as long as possible, both at home and in the car, because it make my electrical bill go crazy, and it’s not great for my gas mileage. (Of course I just went and turned it on, because I hate being hot, but I’ll just run it for a few minutes then turn it back to fan.)) Anyway I’m going to refer to my hastily scrawled post-it of blog ideas. It tells me that I was going to link to Contest Blogger, because they are giving away $100 a month to a random person who links to them, and I am a total whore. Plus, who couldn’t use $100? (See, I turned the air conditioner off already.) Apparently you can also get two additional entries by linking to their other sites Romance Tracker, and Advertising Blogger. A note, Romance Tracker does not seem to have anything to do with romance novels but instead offers real-life romance tips.  So yeah, this was rather boring (although according to WordPress linking to things = traffic) so I’m going to start a new paragraph and hope it’s more interesting.

Yeah, not so much, I ran a bunch of errands today, I bought a bunch of food (which was all kinds of fun to carry back to my apartment).  Of course now I’m hungry and I don’t want to eat any of it, because I’m afraid that I’m going to eat it all up too fast.  Yeah, I’m going to go watch Freaks and Geeks now, on my bed, which is by the open window, and hopefully cooler.

Lots of Pictures, You’ve Been Warned April 13, 2008

Hi people! I don’t know where you all came from, or if you will ever come back, but hi!

I’m tired now, I was working today (for free, blah) on this student film that was a total mess, 9 hrs of everyone taking their sweet time, then 3 hours of oh my god hurry up 2-take set-ups. But the good part was that we were out at Linda Vista which is this amazing abandoned run-down art deco hospital, close to downtown LA. I’ve shot there twice before (on longer and better organized shoots thankfully) and I love it. It’s falling apart, and it’s full of room after room of abandoned furniture, and discarded hospital stuff, and random shit that film crews have left there (also, tons of dirt, not very costume friendly). Last time I was there I tried to take those “empty rooms with stuff in them” kind of pictures, which I’m not very good at. So this time I tried to do more “abstract close-ups”

and “things framed by windows”,

which worked better, because composition was one of my stronger skills in photography. Also most of the building is unlit, except by natural light, so taking pictures through windows works well. I also threw in a healthy number of “things I couldn’t see without the flash”.

This is the view up the dumbwaiter shaft (like an elevator shaft, but tiny!).

This is the same view with no flash, I assume that the lights are coming through the open dumbwaiter doors on each floor. I know that if you are reading this on RSS and or have a slow internet connection you already hate me for posting this many pictures anyway, so I’m going to go ahead and post my favorite ones.

Oh My Frakkin’ Gods April 11, 2008

Filed under: Beauty Queen Hands,TV — Echo Beach @ 8:32 pm

Dude. Battlestar Galactica always has awesome space battles, but that was amazing. The pre-credits sequence was better than anything I’ve seen on TV in months (strike not withstanding). Also, Kara Thrace is a motherfrakkin badass, but if you get in a showdown with Laura Roslin, you are going to lose.

Look!

Filed under: Beauty Queen Hands,Sewing,TV — Echo Beach @ 5:44 pm

Look! I am not writing in the middle of the night. This may very well be my inaugural daytime post, but I am much too lazy to actually go and check.

Also look! I have put links in my sidebar. Now all the people who don’t read my blog can also not read the blogs I like to read. I know there are not very many right now, but I’m sure I will add more. Also I like how my sidebar makes everything lowercase, it’s very soothing. Also, in reading other people’s blogs I have come to the conclusion that the reason I have a hard time talking about other people here is that I can never think up clever nicknames for people. I have clever nicknames for my clothes (just the ones that I’ve sewn myself (mostly)), but people only get one name in my head. Come to think of it, the clothes only have one name too, it’s just one more than most people’s have.

I am trying to break up my posts, so they are not just monolithic blocks of text, but I’m not sure if WordPress is just going to go and smoosh it all back together anyway. Regardless I’m going to go and watch the final-season premier episode of Battlestar Galactica now. I know it aired a week ago, but I’ve been working myself up to it (and successfully avoiding spoilers).

Spazzing and Decorating

Filed under: Home — Echo Beach @ 1:40 am

I totally decided that I was going to write here every day this week, none of that “try to” shit.  So of course I totally forgot until I was just about to brush my teeth (seriously, my toothbrush already has toothpaste on it and everything).  So this is going to be a short post, but I’ve been making my apartment pretty because I decided that I was sick of living like I was about to move, and even if I do move this summer, I can still have a grown up apartment until then.  So in lieu of actual content you get pictures

Also, when I was putting up that flowered curtain thing, I found my remote control!  It had been missing since I left college, and I’d resigned myself to the fact that I must have left it in Wisconsin.  But no!  It was in a carrot-covered plastic bag along with a bunch of de- and re-constructed fake flowers.

Manic Wednesday April 10, 2008

Man did I have a lot of energy today. First I took out all the trash in my apartment, including the stuff at the back of the fridge, and the dead plant that’s been sitting next to my TV for four months. (Taking out the trash is my least favorite chore, not least because I have to haul it down to the dumpster, and I’m lazy.) Then I drove to: the going out of business furniture store (nothing left), Office Depot (files to get all this crap off my “desk”), and IKEA, where I ended up getting everything except what I went there for (bookcase to get the rest of the stuff of my “desk” so I can stop using air quotes about it, it turned out to be too heavy for me to haul up to my apartment). The people at IKEA must have thought I was on drugs or something because I could not stop smiling and touching things, not to mention darting from one side to the other when something caught my eye. But you really have to be in a manic mood to go to IKEA, because it is so huge and full of stuff (sigh). When I got back I replaced the knobs in my kitchen and started to put up the shelf I got for next to my bed (it’s red and it fits exactly in the space available), but it was late and my neighbor yelled at me for hammering (I had to (well, still have to) put anchors in the wall so the screws wouldn’t come out). I was already feeling really guilty about it, and trying to hammer quietly and infrequently, so I stopped when she yelled (this is also why my apartment is still only half vacuumed). I’m still kind of jittery, and not at all tired, and I kind of understand why Manic-Depressives would stop taking their medication. (is that a bad thing to say? I hope not, I didn’t mean it in a bad way!)

Subduing WordPress to My (Considerable) Will April 8, 2008

As you can see I changed the theme I was using (if you’re reading this in RSS you should click over and look, it’s very nice), and I finally found a text-only LibraryThing widget (on the right and down) and I’m very proud of getting it to match the surrounding box. I decided to mix it up because WordPress has redesigned their backend, and it’s very pretty, all brown and light blue. Of course they don’t have any themes that look like it, but I’m happy with what I picked. The real reason for this post (and the ensuing redesign) is to finally figure out how to post pictures here. I didn’t know that they’d updated the interface, so maybe it won’t be a huge pain in the ass after all.

These are screenshots of the DVD menus from Jekyll, the recent BBC Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde re-imagining/miniseries. I wanted to post them because they’re the first menus I’ve seen that seamlessly integrated the menu options into the image, instead of just having them floating on top. (Turns out one of my screenshots didn’t take, so I just have the audio menu)

Jekyll Audio Menu

Yay! I am awesome.  I’m totally going back and fixing my (much) earlier post where I could not get the picture in.
